Wondering where all those people crowding Alaska salmon streams come from? Everywhere, but especially California, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. An examination of 2003 sport-fishing license sales shows that Californians top the list of nonresident anglers, who have become a dominant force on Alaska salmon streams. Californians bought about 35,000 fishing licenses in 2003, said Fish and Game's Doug Vincent-Lang. Residents of the state of Washington came in second with 30,000. The other states rounding out the top five were, in order, Oregon, Texas and Minnesota.

University Place going cable
ANGIE LEVENTIS; The News Tribune University Place has launched a full-time cable station to inform and educate residents about civic issues. Despite this mission, city officials don't intend to televise complete City Council meetings as part of the programming. The new station UPTV features shows on city events such as the May grand opening of the Cirque/Bridgeport Way skatepark and the city festival in August. Readerboard messages will alert residents to city meeting schedules as well as weather and traffic emergencies. Storm grounds Beijing flights
Beijing - Flights were canceled and houses collapsed after the Chinese capital Beijing experienced a rainstorm of unusual severity, state media reported on Sunday. As of 21:30, more than 200 flights scheduled for take-off from Beijing International Airport had been delayed, according to reports. Six houses collapsed, and two people were injured when the freak weather caused an electricity pole to topple, Xinhua said.

After 30 years, update in store for Cincinnati's symbolic heart
For more than 130 years, whenever there is anything worth celebrating -- the end of a world war, welcoming hometown heroes, ringing in a new year, reveling in a World Series championship, even an attempt at a world-record Chicken Dance -- Fountain Square has been where Cincinnatians instinctively flock without being told. Since the days when Ulysses S. Grant was in the White House, Fountain Square -- even before it was a square -- has been not just the geographic heart of downtown Cincinnati, but also in a very real sense the emotional heart of the region.

Arrive Alive R23m under budget
Johannesburg - The government's Arrive Alive road safety campaign announced that it operated on R23m below budget. During this period, the death toll on the country's roads and the number of emergency accidents was the highest in the past four years. Dr Wendy Watson, spokesperson for Arrive Alive, said this money had been requested for various provincial road safety projects, which never materialised. "This money was earmarked for two periods for example December/January and July." She said provinces requested the projects, but for various reasons, the projects never materialised.

SHELBY, N.C. -- Authorities in Shelby say they might be close to discovering who is behind a series of home break-ins. They said the burglar hit nearly a dozen homes in a north Shelby neighborhood, usually stealing money and credit cards. "It looks like a crime of opportunity," said Lt. Steve Canipe of the Shelby Police Department. "Folks have their windows open because of the heat." All of the break-ins were similar, leading police to believe one person is behind them. Henry Lawton said the burglar broke in through his bathroom window. The suspect would often enter through a window and exit undetected.

Tribnet.com - Business
JOHN GILLIE; The News Tribune Construction has quietly resumed on one of the most expensive and contentious public works projects in the history of Puget Sound, the billion-dollar third runway at Sea-Tac Airport. For the Port of Seattle, Sea-Tac's owner, the construction restart marks an important milestone in a long battle with the airport's neighboring communities. They have spent $13 million and half a dozen years challenging the runway's construction in the courts. A state Supreme Court ruling in May cleared the way for the project's resumption. But that victory has been expensive in time and money.

No one was hurt. The fire, in an area of trees and brush, was put out within two hours, said Kevin O'Donnal, Tacoma Fire Department deputy marshal. How the fire started might never be known, O'Donnal said, noting that the department's investigator found several possible causes. Firefighters worried that warm weather and dry brush could fuel the blaze. "It's quite a large area that burned," O'Donnal said.

That means it is preparing for a surge in demand from people turning on their central heating. "It's going to be horrendously cool for this time of year, and it will feel even chillier because of the high winds," said the weather division of the British news agency Press Association.

Instant-messaging software has evolved into the latest weapon in a fierce battle among major internet companies to reap revenues off whatever you do, wherever you go online. Many people spend hours a day with messaging programs active, shooting text to friends and co-workers online. These free products already go well beyond the typed word: People can swap files and chat with webcams and microphones. Now there's even more. Yahoo Inc. has launched internet radio and other new services around its messaging software. Microsoft Corp., meanwhile, is leveraging IM as a subscription gaming hub, while America Online Inc. is packaging weather.

Sunshine welcome for those working outside
After a month of near-daily rains that racked up more than 13 inches in June, local businesses and individuals have taken advantage of the holiday sunshine on Monday. That is people were able to get out and get some work done before a thunderstorm blew into the area in the afternoon. C.A. "Buck" Vandersteen, executive director of Louisiana Forestry Association, said, "Loggers have been working through the Independence Day holiday, trying get wood to the mills." Vandersteen said the heavy rainfall in June made the forests too wet for loggers to get their heavy equipment in and out of the woods.

Record rains: Billings experiences 2nd wettest Fourth since 1934
"It's an older building and we're still finding out what works and what doesn't," Honaker said Monday. Luckily, the few inches of water was mostly contained in that unused basement room. But for Bill and Marcia Honaker, the restaurant's owners, it was just one more chore before the grand opening later this week. "We didn't have a day to give, but c'est la vie," he said. Sunday's storms - particularly the two cells that passed overhead around 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. - provided some of the wettest weather Billings has seen in years. Rain recorders in the city measured 0.99 inches of rain on Sunday and 1.

San Diego County (population 1.3 million in 1970) was still a quiet place. In the early part of the decade, Interstate 805 opened. State Route 125 from South Bay to Santee, and Highway 52 from Santee to La Jolla weren't yet full-fledged freeways. Poway was a small, sleepy community as Mira Mesa and Tierrasanta came into existence. Fashion Valley mall (where Westgate Park once stood) was in the making. Downtown San Diego was pockmarked with honky tonk bars, bowling alleys, tattoo parlors and locker clubs where sailors and Marines stored civilian clothing they couldn't wear on base or ships.

Weekend is busy one at most parks
More than 1,900 people turned out at Mahoney State Park's water complex to cool off on a hot, muggy Fourth of July. At nearby Platte River State Park, all 54 cabins were full, each booked months in advance. "We expected 8,000 to 10,000 people to come through for the three-day weekend," Roger Sykes, superintendent at Platte River State Park, said Sunday. "It's a great weekend to be out. The weather is looking good today." Fourth of July weekend traditionally gives state recreation parks in Nebraska and western Iowa a huge attendance boost.

Missoulian: Let's put our river bridges to work
Speaking of bridges and ballparks, a few suggestions came in after word of the crackdown on enforcing the "no trespassing" signs on the ancient railroad bridge crossing the Clark Fork. The most unique and great idea: Why not a trolley on those tracks to transport folks to and from ball games? It could run, not only from the north and south sides of the city, but even up the Bitterroot and down from the Flathead, bringing fans or commuters to town. A tiny station could be built near the ball field to unload and load passengers. A fine idea for good publicity for all concerned and to solve traffic problems.

How peace broke out at last
On a cool and bright Thursday 10 days ago, Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair's former spin-doctor-in-chief, ran up the stairs of the Royal Automobile Club slightly early for his mid-morning appointment. He was meeting Peter Mandelson, long-time friend, political sparring partner and fellow architect of New Labour. The hour that was to follow will go down as one of the more surreal in the two men's rollercoaster political history. Campbell was at the RAC in Pall Mall to interview Mandelson for his new programme for Channel 5. He would be asking the twice-resigned minister questions to which he already knew the answers.
