Western Cowboy

In the State of Texas the Western Cowboy can be found home on the range. But can you really find a true western cowboy in the state of Texas? At one time you could find real cowboys in Texas but that time was over one hundred years ago.
Up until the end of the war between the north and the south you could find western cowboys still roaming the range. However the end of this conflict brought many changes to the open range.
The railway was completed to areas of the country that previously did not have a good system of transport. Cities were rebuilt and new cities sprung up around the country. The hard feelings between the north and the south never really disappeared totally. Even today in some parts of the country there are pe...

Write For Yourself First

It would be very selfless or noble of me to tell you that I have created my web site only to help you and the rest of humanity. The reason for me spending so much time and energy into my writing and this site is selfish. And I must remind myself of that from time to time, especially when I move into a down period and I am asking myself "why."
The real truth for the site in all honesty is to give myself an outlet for my own thoughts, a forum in which others may benefit. It really is all about me. I place value in my belief system. I can express these thoughts on my site without censorship or having anything cleared or approved by another person or organization. That's important to me. My writing most often gets to the point in as f...

John Wayne

You remember John Wayne right? It’s okay we won’t tell anyone you’re old enough to remember. John Wayne is fondly remembered for his terrific cowboy pictures and his many wild west movies.
Did you know that some of his movies were based on fact? Although most of his movies were fiction there were some that were not. John Wayne’s role as an actor has been wide and varied. He has played a wide scope of characters ranging from cowboys to solders.
John Wayne was born on May 26 1907 in Winterset Iowa as Marion Robert Morrison. Did you know his nickname was Duke? In fact John Wayne actually produced some movies under his nickname.
Duke was a handsome feller, with his six feet four inches tall frame, brown hair and blue ...

Are Writing Exercises Effective?

It was reported that the great American author Sinclair Lewis was once asked to give a lecture on writing to a group of college students: "Looking out at this gathering," he said to the assembled students, "makes me want to know how many of you really and truly wish to become writers?" Every hand in the room went up. Lewis looked at them for a moment and then folded his notes and put them away. "If that's true," he said, "then the best advice I can give you is to go home and start writing." He then turned and left the room.
If the first secret of writing is to write and if you've set up some sort of writing schedule, the next step is to figure out what to write.
Opening a brand new file and looking at a blank screen often resul...

The Mystery of Enlightenment

Initially, enlightenment is living in the present moment and accepting your situation as it is. That is a pretty heavy task for anyone in any time. It is often said that an enlightened person cannot be angered by small talk or negative energy.
Many people are humble and believe that they will never be enlightened in this life. They also believe: The goal of enlightenment is too vast for the average person to achieve. However, should you just give up?
What can you do to attain enlightenment?
You should meditate daily: This will help you connect to the world around you. This is an awareness of plants, animals, people and many things around you that are often not appreciated or overlooked.
Meditation will enhance awareness...

Follow up on New Concepts with Action

This is good advice for Yoga teachers and students alike.
Unfortunately, you cannot progress without implementing new ideas, changing systems, or generating action. You have to accept evolution of ideas and be willing to leap forward. "Sitting on your laurels," will make you lazy and stale.
New ideas come from a variety of resources - your teachers, mentors, coaches, students, books, videos, and many more directions. If you don’t write them down, they will be forgotten. Then you must put them in an area where you will refer back to them.
Hopefully, this is an area that you will visit often. Good places to store valuable notes are: On your desk top, in a personal journal, or on your palm pilot. Refer back to your notes often...

Critique The Poem Not The Poet

The act of writing poetry is something that is very personal to us poets and sharing it for the first time can be a very frightening experience. The first experience of having your work criticized can boggle our mind and set us back a step in our writing. However critique is essential in any writer’s career.
Accepting criticism is something that we all must face even if we don't like it. When I received my first harsh critique it was on a ezboard workshop and right then I wanted to give up writing. They were arrogant and my opinion very mean. It was the most painful experience.
Running an online writing community for the last two years I have met a few arrogant and mean people just like the one on Ezboard. I think that some of ...

A Person Is Known By the Blog He Keeps

Literature is the soul of the wit. The best source of literature can be now found in blogs. The growing trend of ‘blogmania’ is slowly sweeping the netizens. Every person aspires to have a blog as a platform to publish his thoughts and be heard and read.
General surveys undertaken on blogs and bloggers shows a rising trend in blogging. A parallel platform for literary endeavor, the blogs are overthrowing the traditional journalistic norms. Publishing of news and views no longer remains the privilege of an elite minority. Anybody and everybody is free to get in touch and explore the writer within himself. The anamorphic nature of the human soul is best reflected in the blogs.

Refinance Student Loans - How and Why?

Let’s face facts. Going to college these days, especially private universities, is no cheap task and can put you well into debt before you even enter the "real world" for yourself. Most people, especially young college students, do not have the tens of thousands of dollars to pony up every year for college tuition either. Therefore, most college students choose to use student loans to put themselves through college, whereby they can pay the tuition without breaking a sweat. However, when it comes time to graduate from college and pay these student loans back, many people do not know where to begin. How about refinancing these loans before you even start anything else?
Advantages of Refinancing
By refinancing your student loans...

Publisher, Are You Getting What You Deserve?

Isn't it about time that publishers reaped their long, overdue recognition? Jane Fulton and Jude Wright, owners of Three Dollar Ads think so! Since we are both publishers, we got together and decided to put together a site that benefits publishers for all their hard work:
http://threedollarads.com/index.htm
This is what we came up with:
How about...

Being part of a publishers community where you can share ideas, problems, concerns...with people that under them because they are publishers just like you are--Someone you have things in common with.
Being part of an affiliate program that is ONLY open to publishers. What does that mean to you?...

Awesome Endings

Bungee jumping, sky diving, secret mission, Indy 500: how do these events compare to the art of fiction writing? Each one brings to its ‘doer’ an element of anticipation, exhilaration, unfamiliarity, and adventure. A pure adrenaline rush. And as a writer of fiction, this is the plateau you want your reader to experience.
Straying from the anticipated ending to a twist makes for good reading, pleasing the editor, and upping your chance of getting accepted. But be wary. Your twist should conform along the lines of the story you have crafted thus far. Not an easy task to accomplish, but plausible.
For example: fifteen-year-old John stole the answers to his exam from his teacher’s desk. Throughout the storyline, John has been portr...

The Biggest Challenge Facing A Poet, Getting Published

The best advice that I can give any child or adult who wants to be a poet is to read lots of poetry. Get a feel for poetry. Look at different styles of poetry. I have grown so much in my own writing by reading the work of other poets. Don’t be afraid to accept constructive criticism. Part of being a writer is being able to accept criticism. Everyone who writes poetry is eager to publish a book but why not start out small. Before you send off your poetry for publication ask yourself if you are ready. It might be wise to Join an online poetry community and share your poetry with other poets who will be honest with you and offer some constructive criticism.
Once you are ready to take that plunge the best place to start is poetry maga...

The Hostel

Read an excerpt from the book:

"My name’s Henry," he told her. "What’s yours?"
"Nina," she replied.
He smiled at her. "Nina, a lovely name&ldots;," Henry said.
"What did you say?" Nina said. "I can’t hear you! The music is too loud."
"I love your name," he said loudly.
Nina blushed and then the music slowed down and they started dancing to a passionate love song. Henry’s face touched her cheek and she did not react. She let the music drive her to a dream world.
As the night went by the girls were absorbed in their partners and nobody noticed the time. Nina was busy chatting with Henry in a dark corner of the disco, and when he bent over and kissed her she did not go away. She liked that warm feelin...

Inside Elance: Thirteen Writers Explain Why Elance Works for Them

Browsing through the writing projects at Elance, one thing stands out. It’s the "Recent Earnings" figures listed with each bidder’s name. These aren’t fake figures – these figures show what real writers have been able to earn and they range from $1000 to $60,000.
If some writers are making $60,000 a year, then Elance looks like a great opportunity for writers. Yet, a lot of the talk is against Elance. People say that it’s unfair that they charge writers fees, that you won’t get paid what you’re worth, and that the bidding process pushes the value of services down. Is there truth in that?
To find out and to get an inside look at Elance, I found people earning good money on Elance and asked them a few questions. Here’s what they...
